The South Korean authorities, together with various construction and investment companies, planned to build a modern metropolis on the coast of the Yellow Sea – the city of Songdo. More than $40 billion has already been spent on the construction of the first “smart city”, but today the futuristic city looks more like the “Chernobyl exclusion zone” than a living metropolis.
Songdo City was designed as a “smart city” project that had to be built from scratch. The designers had great ambitions: on 600 hectares of drained swamps, it was planned to build residential areas for several hundred thousand inhabitants, dozens of modern skyscrapers with offices, shopping areas and parks. Every building was to have smart sensors and video cameras to maximize security in the city and respond quickly to emergencies.
All the tracks and trails were designed so that you can reach any point in the city in a maximum of 20 minutes. The city of the future was supposed to receive power from solar panels and hydroelectric stations, it was planned to install rainwater collectors for watering gardens and cleaning streets. It was planned to introduce pneumatic tubes throughout the city to collect garbage and process it quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, these plans were not destined to come true.
Initially, the smart city project ended in 2015, but due to various problems with the developers, it was extended for three years. As it turned out, this was not enough, due to the lack of cultural and entertainment complexes (cinemas, museums, amusement parks) and the high cost of living, the city of Songdo did not attract the required number of residents. Therefore, many construction companies were disappointed and “froze” the construction site. If you walk through the streets of Songdo today, you can see many abandoned and unfinished buildings.
Now about a hundred thousand people live in a smart city, which is very small for a modern Korean metropolis (for example, 3 million live in the nearest city, Incheon). The city authorities are trying to develop the tourism sector and plan to make Songdo an attractive city for foreigners (the American quarter is already under construction), but the original plans to populate the smart city will most likely no longer be realized. make it come true
