The changes include removing licensing requirements for some spacecraft components, allowing them to be exported to more than 40 allied countries, including NATO and EU members. In addition, the Commerce Department plans to transfer some space technologies, such as spacecraft with autonomous capabilities, from the more tightly controlled U.S. weapons list to a more flexible export control list, thereby facilitating the country’s international trade.
According to a Commerce Department spokesperson, the reform will “facilitate secure trade with our partners” while ensuring the “protection of sensitive military technologies.”
