Russian Academy of Sciences, chemical institutes of Moscow State University and Moscow, Chernogolovka and St. Employees of federal research centers in St. Petersburg have created transparent composite materials with nanocrystalline diamonds evenly distributed in the airgel matrix. The press service of the ministry stated that the concentration of nanodiamonds in composites varies from 0.01% to 1%, which makes it possible to change the optical properties of materials.

Diamond nanocrystals obtained by explosion create new opportunities for use in quantum photonics, bioimaging and targeted drug delivery. The researchers used a one-step synthesis method at room temperature, which greatly simplifies the process. An important component is dimethyl sulfoxide, which ensures homogeneity of the reaction mixture.

According to Irina Fomina, senior researcher at the laboratory of the Institute of General Economics and Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the use of surface-modified nanodiamonds and silicon dioxide aerogels opens prospects for the creation of new functional materials in the field of optics and optoelectronics.
