Rospotrebnadzor stopped operation of confectionery factory after reports of marshmallow poisoning

“During the inspection, numerous violations of sanitary norms and rules were revealed, including poor maintenance of production facilities, technological equipment, violation of storage conditions, and the storage of raw materials was not fully controlled. During the inspection it was determined that there was no confirmation of the expiration dates of the products,” Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement.

They added that the factory’s work has been suspended on the basis of a protocol on the temporary ban on activities under Article 6.4 of the Administrative Code. The documents have been presented to the court for administrative suspension of activities, the department clarified.

Retailers Vkusvill, Lenta and X5 Group (owners of the Perekrestok, Pyaterochka and other retail chains) announced the suspension of the sale of marshmallows produced at the Sokol factory, Rospotrebnadzor noted.

• The Mash Telegram channel wrote about a mass marshmallow poisoning with maltitol syrup (a sugar substitute) in mid-October. According to him, customers from Pyaterochka and Perekrestok, who ate Giselle marshmallows, and from Vkusvilla, who ate Classic marshmallows, complained about health problems.
• Vkusville stated that the information about the poisoning is not true. The company explained that maltitol is a legally permitted additive and that the marshmallow has passed all routine laboratory tests. Vkusville promised to send new marshmallow samples for unscheduled studies to confirm their safety.
• X5 Group informed RBC that it had withdrawn marshmallows with maltitol from sale in Pyaterochka, Perekrestok and in the Vprok.ru online hypermarket, but emphasized that it had not recorded any customer complaints about this product.
