This increase in patenting activity dovetails with China’s efforts to strengthen its semiconductor industry through advances in artificial intelligence and increased investments in research and development. Experts believe that the explosion in patents is China’s strategic response to US sanctions that began to take effect in 2019. Despite the closure of more than 22,000 chip companies, China’s focus on innovation continues to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor race, analysts say.

Huawei, the leader in patent applications worldwide, applied for 6,494 patents last year.
