Contrary to previous theories that suggested microbes release enzymes into their environment, the new study shows that microbes use sticky enzymes in their cell walls to extract iron without wasting energy. This process causes a black film and indentations to form on the surface of the iron, causing serious damage within a few months.
This phenomenon has both economic and environmental consequences. Methanogenic microbes produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas, raising concerns about rising emissions.
The findings, supported by the Danish Foundation for Independent Science and the European Research Council, may help develop strategies to prevent MIC.
