A UK court sentenced Hugh Nelson, 27, to 18 years in prison for creating deepfakes featuring images of sexualized child abuse, The Guardian reported. According to the newspaper, this is the first sentence of its kind in the country.

The criminal was found guilty of 16 charges. Investigators say he used DAZ 3D, a software program powered by artificial intelligence, to transform real photographs of children into images of sexualized violence and then sell them online. Thus, in 18 months Nelson earned about 5 thousand pounds sterling (approximately 625 thousand rubles at the exchange rate of the Central Bank as of October 26), writes the publication.
In some cases, pedophiles commissioned these types of images and provided photographs of minors with whom they interacted in real life to create them, which is why Nelson was also accused of inciting other criminals to commit rape, The Guardian noted.
Deepfake is content in which the original person (the one who initially appears in the photo or video) is replaced by another person. This technology is used to create movies and television series, memes, as well as to mislead people and make propaganda.
