The project, led by SunCable, will transport clean solar energy from Australia to Singapore via a 4,300-kilometer subsea cable, providing a “24-hour renewable energy supply”.

The permit allows for the construction of a 10GW solar farm at Powell Creek and an 800km overhead line to connect the solar farm to Darwin. The project will provide 900 MW of green electricity in the first phase, and the capacity will increase to 4 GW for local industry. An additional 1.75 GW of energy will be converted for subsea transmission to Singapore.

SunCable, which was acquired by billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes last year, plans to make a final investment decision by 2027, with first electricity deliveries expected in the early 2030s.
