Boston Dynamics has released a new video of its Atlas humanoid robot. In the video, he sorts spare parts independently, moving them between containers. The manufacturer highlighted that Atlas does this autonomously, using computer vision based on machine learning.

“There are no prescribed or telecontrolled movements, all movements are generated autonomously in real time. The robot is able to detect and respond to changes in the environment (such as moving objects) and perturbations in actions using a combination of vision, force and proprioception sensors,” the video description reads.
He claims that the robot only receives data about the location of the containers and makes other decisions on its own. In particular, Atlas uses “a special program to capture objects and continually evaluate their status to complete the task,” Boston Dynamics said.
In early October, Boston Dynamics announced a partnership with Toyota to jointly develop humanoid robots with artificial intelligence. It was noted that the project will draw on the expertise of Boston Dynamics engineers in creating robots and the expertise of the Toyota Research Institute, which is “widely recognized as a world leader in developing large behavioral models for robotics.”
The director of the institute, Toyota chief scientist Jill Pratt, in an interview with Bloomberg, said that one of the ultimate goals of the project is to introduce robots on factory assembly lines and in nursing homes to care for seniors.
