Chest injuries are the third most common of all types of injuries and are characterized by a high mortality rate, second only to traumatic brain injuries. The most common are rib fractures, which can account for 40 to 92% of all cases. These cause long-term pain and negatively affect quality of life by limiting physical activity, the press service said.
The proposed method involves minimally invasive retrograde intramedullary fixation of fractures. Surgeons make small holes and insert a fixation element into the bone, which preserves the integrity of the soft tissue and quickly restores breathing.
Assistant of the Department of Surgical Diseases Sergei Glinyany noted that the new technology significantly reduces the number of complications, reduces the need for artificial ventilation and shortens the duration of disability.
