An algorithm adapted from human diagnostic methods can automatically detect and classify heart murmurs from audio recordings obtained from digital stethoscopes. In testing, the algorithm showed a sensitivity of 90%, comparable to experienced cardiologists.
Heart murmurs are an important symptom of mitral valve disease, the most common heart disease in adult dogs. Approximately one in thirty dogs has a heart murmur, and the condition is more common in small and older dogs. Early diagnosis of these diseases is critical because prompt treatment can extend your pet’s life.
The developed technology could become an accessible and effective tool for general veterinarians that will improve the quality of life of dogs. The team collected data from nearly 800 dogs who underwent regular heart screenings, creating the largest database of canine heartbeat sounds.
