Microsoft Paint has undergone a transformation like we’ve never seen before. After being sidelined and deemed obsolete, the image editing app has risen like a phoenix in the age of artificial intelligence. In recent months, Microsoft has released updates aimed at improving the user experience and bringing it closer to more robust programs like Photoshop.
The latest version available to Windows 11 Insider users includes ability to change image style. According to Microsoft in a blog post, Paint has implemented Restyle, an AI-powered feature that lets you transform the artistic style of images on the canvas. If you have a photo and want to transform it into pop art or give it an impressionistic touch, you can do it with just one click.
Restyling for Paint accessible through the Copilot menu and offers a preset list of styles. To use them, you just need to open the image in Paint, click the Copilot button and select the option Change style. A sidebar will open with a preview of the style, which you can apply by clicking the Create button.
New feature allows you to immediately add a style, copy it or save it if you want to apply it later. It’s worth noting that this feature uses your computer’s artificial intelligence capabilities, so you’ll need Copilot+ PC with Snapdragon processor. It is also a mandatory requirement to log in with your Microsoft account; Otherwise, you won’t be able to create content with Copilot.
Microsoft Paint will steal two features from Photoshop
The arrival of Restyle comes just weeks after Microsoft rolled out new features to improve the Paint editing experience. The late September update added two improvements: project files and opacity support. The first allows you to save the image as an editable project file to continue where you left off.
Project files are often used in editing programs such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, or Audacity. This function save layers, sequences, effects and other elements which you are using, or even a library with source files. With Microsoft Paint, you keep the canvas exactly as you left it, with layers and other elements.

Another feature that brings it closer to Photoshop is opacity control. Paint now has a slider, adjust stroke transparency when using a pencil or brush. By combining layers, users can create smoother transitions or effects that were previously only possible in Adobe software and other trusted applications.
All functions, including the Restyle function, are already there. available in latest version of Paint (11.2509.441.0)which can be downloaded from the Canary, Dev and Beta channels for Windows 11. If you are still using Windows 10, you will not be able to access them, so you will have to use the legacy version if you still have it installed on your operating system.
