In studies conducted on mice, scientists showed that the new treatment completely eliminated tumors in most animals and significantly extended their lives. The technology could be useful in controlling the growth of rapidly developing tumors, which is important for patients with limited treatment options, the scientists said.

The microparticles are made of molybdenum disulfide, which effectively converts laser light into heat. This allows the use of low-power lasers for thermal treatment of tumor cells. Scientists have also developed a technique to combine phototherapy with chemotherapy to make treatment gentler for patients and increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

Each microparticle, 200 micrometers in size, is implanted into the tumor and remains in place throughout the treatment. Scientists used machine learning algorithms to optimize the laser treatment mode, which allowed them to achieve high results without significant harm to the body.

After treatment, mice treated with the new therapy had their tumors completely destroyed, and the animals lived significantly longer than those that received only one of the therapies or no treatment at all.
