In his presentation, Morin described how Linux and other “open source” programs such as OpenColorIO, originally developed by Sony Pictures Imageworks, have become integral parts of major film productions. Founded in 2018 with the support of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, ASWF manages 14 major cinema projects. OpenVDB by DreamWorks and OpenEXR from Industrial Light & Magic are notable examples of tools supported by ASWF and media authoring.
In addition to hosting programs, ASWF provides financing, marketing, infrastructure and legal support to projects.
