scam calls They are the bread and butter of many users. Apps like TrueCaller or Google Phone have identifiers that determine whether an incoming call is from a banking institution or is fraud. Although these apps help reduce the problem, they do not completely solve it, so Google turns to artificial intelligence.

During the I/O 2024 presentation, Google showed off a new feature that detects fraudulent calls using artificial intelligence. Unlike TrueCaller, this feature does not rely on a database, but rather Analyzes conversation in real time to find specific words or phrases.. If it detects them, it will trigger an alert and prompt you to hang up.

This is possible thanks to the Gemini Nano, the base model of the Pixel. According to Google, conversation analysis is done directly on the device and no data is uploaded to the cloud, keeping conversations private.

“We’re testing a new feature that uses Gemini Nano to provide real-time alerts during a call if it detects conversation patterns commonly associated with fraud,” said Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem, in a Google blog post. “For example, you will be alerted if a “bank representative” asks you to urgently transfer funds, make a payment using a gift card, or asks you to provide personal information such as card PINs or passwords.”

David Burke, Google’s chief technology officer, gave a demonstration during I/O 2024 on a private number. This feature is currently in testing and will be implemented in the future as an additional feature on Pixels.

Gemini Nano, Google’s key to identifying fraudulent calls

Identification of fraudulent calls is possible thanks to Gemini Nano. This smaller and optimized version of the Gemini models was designed specifically to work on mobile devices.

Gemini Nano can run directly on the phone’s hardware, which gives it several important advantages. Unlike its older brother, the AI Nano does not require an Internet connection. Tasks are completed on the device, and this feature protects the privacy and security of personal data.

The next version of the Gemini Nano, which will debut with the Pixel 9, will be capable of understanding text, video, images and sounds. This multi-modal feature will be used to analyze the call in real time for signs of fraud.

While Google’s proposal is interesting, the truth is that it will be limited to a small number of mobile phones. It is a fact that the next Pixel and Samsung Galaxy will come with this feature, but what about Xiaomi, Realme and other mid-range or low-end models?

Scam calls are a problem for millions of users. According to the National Police and Civil Guard, There were more than 10,300 phone scams in Spain in 2022. The most common ones are those that attempt to obtain personal or banking information from victims by posing as a legitimate entity.

On the other hand, according to the National Telecommunications Association (ANATEL), 2023 turns out to be a critical year for fraudulent calls in Mexico. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office for Consumer Protection (Profeco) and representatives of telephone operators and services signed an agreement to combat fraud at the beginning of 2024.
