The European Commission has announced the opening of a new antitrust investigation into Corning.
The agency alleges that the company proposed to “abuse its recommendations in the global market for a special type of glass that is primarily used to protect the screens of portable electronic devices such as mobile phones.”
Apple has been working with Corning since 2007, when it released the first iPhone. The company supplies glass for smartphones.
The Commission is concerned that Corning may have violated competition rules by entering into anticompetitive exclusive supply agreements with mobile phone manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers or “OEMs”) and with companies that recycle raw glass (“developers”).
The Commission is concerned that the agreements Corning has with manufacturers may be creating competing glass manufacturers in large market segments, limiting customer choice, raising prices and limiting innovation, harming consumers around the world.
