The ICBM was launched without equipment. The launch was carried out by a joint team of US Air Force and Navy pilots.
Perhaps this launch is a preparation or interim effort to replace the older Minuteman III with the three-stage Sentinel ICBM. These missiles will begin entering U.S. service around 2030, and a full replacement of the arsenal is expected to be completed by 2038.
“A joint team of Air Force and Navy pilots launched an underpowered Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile,” Vandenberg AFB said in a statement.
