Development of the variety was carried out by experts from the All-Russian Research Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (VNIISB) together with the company Progress Agro from the Krasnodar Territory with the support of the Kurchatov Genome Center. Thanks to the use of molecular markers, scientists were able to predict the properties of plants and select the most valuable options, the press service reported.
According to Mikhail Divashuk, head of the Kurchatov Genome Center at VNIISB, scientists have managed to significantly reduce the growing season of sunflower to 2.5 months. This became possible thanks to the optimal choice of lighting conditions, temperature and gas medium. To save time, a new generation of sunflowers is grown from immature embryos in laboratory test tubes, allowing for up to six generations of plants per year.
