For comparison, the international box office of Russian projects for the entire year 2023 amounted to $17.6 million. At the same time, in July-September the pace of domestic content collection abroad continued to decline: during this period, Russian cinema earned 1.1 million dollars abroad. This was due to the uneven distribution of box office revenues from movie theaters throughout the year, the CEO of Roskino (which represents the Russian industry in international markets) told Kommersant. Antonov.
The most successful domestic projects abroad were the Masha and the Bear franchise (grossed $2.8 million), the cartoon Cats of the Hermitage ($2.1 million) and the animated film The Snow Queen: Defrosting ($2.1 million). The thriller “I’m Going to Play”, which grossed $1 million, remained the best among game projects.
The leaders among the markets for watching Russian films were China ($1.8 million), Brazil ($1.2 million) and Mexico ($1.2 million). In terms of international collection of local content, Russia is ahead of Mexico ($5.4 million) and Brazil ($2.9 million), but behind Spain ($18.4 million) and Germany ($27.5 million).
A significant part of the cartoons shown abroad “have been present there for a long time,” said BK editor-in-chief Maxim Ostry in an interview with Kommersant. At the same time, in his opinion, the data for the second and third quarters of 2024 show that the international market lacks Russian animation.
