The European Commission explained the reasons for the investigation: Corning is presumed to have engaged in anti-competitive practices, allegedly preventing healthy competition between glass manufacturers through exclusive supply agreements.
According to a press release from the European Commission, Corning requires mobile device manufacturers to purchase only all or almost all of the glass for the production of alkaline silicate batteries and at the same time provides discounts to these sellers, which manipulates the market situation. Separately, regulators will examine whether Corning requires smartphone makers to report whether they have received competitive bids from other glass makers. And manufacturers “have no right to accept these offers unless Corning can offer a better price.”
If at least one of the items is confirmed, a comprehensive investigation will be launched against Corning, which could result in significant fines.
