Cybercriminals are using compromised US government and police email addresses to send these requests designed to obtain sensitive information in “emergency situations.”

The situation has worsened since August, when cybercriminals began advertising their access to law enforcement email addresses in online forums, according to the FBI. These fake requests often cite fictitious emergencies, such as human trafficking or life-threatening situations, in order to trick companies into handing over people’s data. Not all attempts were successful, but hackers still managed to fool anonymous companies and get hold of ordinary people’s personal information.
