The study, published in the journal BMC Public Health, included more than 3,000 participants over the age of 60 who were not suffering from serious illness at the start of the study in 2011. In the study, scientists identified five types of changes in sleep duration, including normal fixed duration, decrease, increase, and others.
The results showed that participants with decreased or unstable sleep were significantly less likely to age successfully. In particular, those who slept less or longer than usual were less likely to age successfully. Only 13.8% of study participants met criteria for successful aging in 2020.
