Google has released a standalone app for the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) for Apple smartphones. It is now possible to download and install the Gemini platform on iPhones with iOS 16 and above via the App Store.

The service brings all of Gemini’s main functions that were previously limited to a tab in the official Google app. Using the tool, you can create text or an image, ask for more information about a photo, ask for recommendations for recipes or restaurants, and ask questions about general topics.

Another important addition is Gemini LiveA shortcut to AI results and interactions that appear in Dynamic Island and on the device’s lock screen.

As with Gemini Advanced, which is part of the Google One subscription bundle, the app is free to download and use unless you subscribe to one of the paid versions of the AI service. Brazilian Portuguese is one of the languages. The tool has been supported since launch.

Although Gemini for iOS integrates with the system and works optimally with other Google applications there are still some operating limitations.

“Gemini can be very useful in your daily life, for example, to check weather forecasts, give route instructions, and find and summarize information on the web and in apps, but it still cannot set alarms, send text messages, and perform other actions on iOS,” reads the app’s description.

Google’s service is now a direct competitor to Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI tools that work in a similar manner.

But the feature suite only works on more modern Apple devices, and so far not all functions have been launched, including the “turbocharged” update of the personal assistant Siri and the Brazilian Portuguese version, which is expected to arrive only in 2025.
