Teixeira, 22, was responsible for one of the largest leaks of classified military documents in US history. He posted hundreds of pages of sensitive material on a private Discord server, including information about troop movements in Ukraine and U.S. intelligence activities in countries such as China, Russia and South Korea.

Teixeira, who had a Top Secret security clearance, used workstations at the Otis USANG base in Massachusetts to search for classified documents unrelated to his duties. He first published text versions of the documents, then published photographs of the materials when other community members did not pay attention to them.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy condemned the leak as a breach that “had long-lasting consequences for U.S. national security” and was a “major blow to intelligence operations.”
