Affected employees are receiving calls from “placement consultants” explaining how the new policy works, Bloomberg writes. Consultants review medical records, discuss the effectiveness of remote work with those already permitted, and also learn what previous attempts to work in the office were like.

If the consultant confirms that the person must renew or issue the permit, another Amazon manager signs it. Otherwise, the request is sent to a responsible third party.

Some employees may be asked to return to the office for a month to determine if the environment meets their needs.

Bloomberg previously reported that starting in January, employees will be required to attend the office five days a week.

Amazon CEO Andy Jesse believes the return to the office will strengthen the company’s culture, which he believes has suffered since the pandemic hit and has become overly bureaucratic. Some employees see it as a way to force people to quit and downsize, but the company denies there are any ulterior motives.
