According to Schmidt, working in an office provides a unique experience that cannot be obtained working remotely. “When I was a young leader, I had no idea what I was doing. I literally got there by luck and learned by chatting at the water cooler, attending meetings, being in the hallways, just talking,” said the former Google director, who held this position from 2001 to 2011.

He added that the knowledge acquired in the office was “central” to the development of his career. “If you’re in your twenties, choose an office job because that’s how you’ll get promoted,” Schmidt advised.

Some studies also suggest that employees who work in an office are more likely to receive promotions. Live Data Technologies analyzed data from 2 million office workers and found that over the past year, fully remote workers received promotions 31% less than their colleagues with hybrid and regular schedules.

However, Schmidt noted that other studies have shown that the flexibility that comes with working from home can improve productivity, and many employees who choose to telework have good reasons for doing so. “I don’t like it, but I want to acknowledge that this data exists,” the former Google CEO said.
