A team from the James Beam Distilled Beverage Research Institute investigated the possibility of converting stagnant water into methane using anaerobic bacteria. The results showed that grain mixes high in corn produced more methane, while mixes containing rye produced less methane. Methane, a cleaner fuel, can be used to power distilleries, heat homes and generate electricity.
This process not only reduces the environmental burden of bourbon production waste, but also creates a circular economy.
