Fat tissue retains a kind of “memory” after becoming obese, according to the new study. This could potentially explain how fat changes when you lose or gain weight.
Associate professor of health sciences and technology at ETH Zurich. Ferdinand von Meyenne and a team of scientists discovered that people’s genes change so much during obesity that they do not return to normal, even at the transcriptional level. That is, changes occur in the way our cells copy and control genetic material.
It turns out that our body is struggling to lose weight and wants to get back to normal. Fat tissue is simply programmed to return to the original weight that was present during obesity.
