OpenAI confirmed this ChatGPT voice assistant is now available on the Internet. Users will no longer need to download a mobile app to access it as they will be able to ask AI questions from the browser. The implementation comes just days after the technology company acquired one of the oldest domains on the internet.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, announced the voice assistant on his X (Twitter) account. “This week, paid users of ChatGPT will be able to enjoy an enhanced voice experience on the Internet,” he said. “We launched Enhanced Voice in our iOS and Android apps in September and recently added it to our desktop apps. Now we’re excited to add a web interface to that.”
ChatGPT advanced voice mode has been one of the greatest surprises during the presentation of GPT-4o. AI-powered voice assistant able to maintain smooth conversation with userswho can ask any questions and interrupt you at any time. One of the most striking features is the response time, as OpenAI adjusted it to reduce latency and invite more natural conversation.
“If you haven’t tried it, do it. Now this seems normal to me, but two years ago I would not have believed that this was possible,” said the OpenAI manager. Weil noted that during his last trip to Japan, he used advanced voice mode as a translator, which helped him conduct business conversations with local residents.
How to Test ChatGPT Voice Assistant on the Internet
If you want to use ChatGPT advanced voice mode, you must meet a number of requirements. Initially, this function is only available available to ChatGPT Plus subscribersmembership that offers access to other language models and allows for more consultation. If you pay a monthly fee, you can activate it directly using the microphone icon in the chat window.
The advanced voice feature uses GPT-4o’s native audio capabilities. Generally speaking, the voice assistant is Alexa, which can pick up nonverbal cues and respond emotionally. Unlike what we see with regular assistants, ChatGPT has lower latency so it will feel like you’re talking to a human.
Once you activate the voice assistant, a blue orb will appear in the center, which means you can now speak. It’s worth mentioning that you must have a microphone connected to the computer either through headphones or using the built-in one by default. Another important requirement is to provide ChatGPT permissions so that the browser can use the microphone.
At the moment, Enhanced Voice Mode is only available to paid users. They will likely release users with a free account in the coming days, although, like the mobile versions, the assistant will have a daily limit.
