It follows that business owners’ priorities are changing as they adapt to new economic realities. More than 40% of registrations traditionally come from construction and wholesale trade, but the “real changes” are reflected in other indicators, the newspaper writes.

One of the key changes is observed in the variation in the sector’s share of the total number of SME registrations. According to their data, retail trade is once again in the lead: the number of new companies in this sector in the first nine months of 2024 increased by 19% year-on-year, so the share of this sector in the total number of registrations of small and medium-sized companies increased 2.3 percentage points (pp), up to 9.9%.

The IT sector also remains popular: the number of registrations in it increased by 5% in January-September, the share in the total volume of registrations increased by 0.5 percentage points to 4.1%. In addition, retail trade and IT are among the leaders in terms of intensity of new business creation (per thousand organizations in the sector) with indicators of 97 and 94, respectively.

Excluding retail trade and IT, the leading industries in terms of growth in the share of registrations have changed: unlike 2023, they did not include transportation, construction and administrative activities, Kommersant noted.

At the same time, the list included professional and scientific and technical activities (the share of the sector in the total number of registrations in the first nine months of 2024 increased by 0.9 percentage points, to 8.3%), the manufacturing industry ( increase to 7.9% compared to 7.2% in 2023), restaurants and hotels (growth of 0.9 percentage points, up to 3.6%).

The business areas that have become most popular among SMEs this year largely reflect the priority sectors supported by the Russian government, the newspaper reported. According to the publication’s journalists, the new interests of businessmen are explained by the expectation of additional help from the State.
