“Twitch told us they are working on a new system to classify content intended for” adults, which provides for a new authentication system,” the UK authority insists. “However, we believe that even the new system would not be able to provide an adequate answer to the problem.”
But Twitch, that also no form of nudity explicitly, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. In his report, Ofcam mainly points the finger at real adult sites. “Different pornographic sites they informed us that they do not intend to verify the age of their users in any way, for fear that traffic could move to competing sites,” the authority explains.
The UK government attempted to impose a mandatory age verification mechanism between 2016 and 2019. Under the assumptions, users were expected to be unable to access sites such as: pornhub without buying a coupon – a PIN – from tobacconists or other authorized dealers. This coupon was of course issued after verification of the age of the customer, who should have presented a valid document at the time of purchase. The proposal was shelved due to the obvious privacy bias it would have introduced.
Twitch, meanwhile, has responded to Ofcom’s concerns by claiming to be “constantly working to improve the security of the entire community”, adding that “we are working on a new system to protect users between the ages of 13 and 17”.
