Sam Altman, who runs one of the most valuable startups in the world, earned $76,000 in 2023, Business Insider reports, citing OpenAI’s tax returns. Altman’s salary increased 3.4% compared to 2022, when he received $73,500.

Business Insider, citing data from the US Census Bureau, notes that the median household income in San Francisco County, where Altman owns a mansion worth $27 million, is $126.7 thousand. According to the US Social Security Administration, in 2023 the average wage rate in. country amounted to 66.6 thousand dollars.
Altman previously said he receives modest compensation for his work at OpenAI, Business Insider writes. During a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing in May 2023, Altman said he “makes enough to pay for health insurance” and receives no stock in the company.
In March 2024, Bloomberg estimated that the head of OpenAI was worth at least $2 billion, not including any stake in the company he might own. According to Bloomberg, this figure takes into account investments in various venture capital funds worth $1.2 billion.
According to OpenAI’s tax filings, the highest-paid employees were co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Chris Clark, who is listed as the company’s secretary/treasurer. They received 347.4 thousand and 322.2 thousand dollars, respectively, writes Business Insider.
Sutzwecker left OpenAI in May of this year and created a new AI company, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), in June.
In October, OpenAI closed a $6.6 billion investment round and received a valuation of $157 billion, becoming the world’s third-largest non-public company by capitalization.
