People who speak two languages at different levels are called bilinguals. At the same time, bilinguals can be “balanced” or “unbalanced” (this depends on a person’s level of linguistic knowledge) and “early” or “late” (this depends on a person’s age). acquainted with a second language).

Scientists from the HSE Cognitive Neuroscience Institute, along with their colleagues, discovered whether “late” bilinguals could quickly process information about a word’s meaning if they used a second language in parallel. To do this, 17 students of the National Research University Higher School of Economics – native Russian speakers completed a special task. EEG of the subjects was recorded during the experiment.

It turned out that their brains began to respond to the task after 40-60 ms. It also turned out that in the brains of such people, words related to the second language are associated with words in the first language. And it was done automatically.
