The senators warned that the TSA plans to deploy facial recognition at more than 430 airports, despite the lack of an independent assessment of its accuracy or adequate guarantees of passenger privacy.

The letter, signed by lawmakers including Jeffrey Merkley and Ted Cruz, also questions the program’s effectiveness and says the TSA has provided no evidence linking facial recognition to reducing delays or detecting fraudulent documents.

When fully implemented, the system’s 3% false negative rate could mean more than 68,000 failures per day.
