Methane and silane are among the most abundant substances in the Universe. They are found in the atmospheres of giant planets and nebulae. Research carried out by Tomsk physicists will contribute to the database of spectral lines used in astrophysics.

The scientists’ work was based on the method of spectroscopy, which allows studying the electromagnetic radiation that occurs during the transitions between energy levels of molecules. The more accurate the spectral data, the more information can be obtained about distant objects in space, said Elena Bekhtereva, co-author of the study and professor at the TPU Research School of Physics of High Energy Processes.

The work was carried out on a Fourier spectrometer in collaboration with foreign colleagues. Data analysis was performed using a software package developed at TPU. Scientists have managed to calculate the parameters of the effective Hamiltonian, which expands the possibilities of studying the microcosm and its connection with planetary science.
