Each profession has its own special tool, which in the daily life of people of other professions may not be used at all, or may be similar to others, but differ in details. If we take a monitor as an example, then it is used in many aspects of our lives, but its varieties and uses are extensive.

When you hear the word “monitor,” you first imagine it stationary and standing next to a personal computer. Next, you can remember the monitor on a smartphone and on a tablet, someone on a radio tape recorder. But in addition to these types of options, there are also portable monitors that do not take up much space, but that do not differ much from their older brothers. In this review, we will focus on such a ViewSonic VG 1655 portable monitor.

Packaging and equipment

In my opinion, a portable monitor is bought by people who know exactly why they need it and what tasks they will be using it for. Apparently, ViewSonic decided the same thing and didn’t strongly focus buyers’ attention on the packaging. ViewSonic VG 1655 comes in a thick cardboard box with the minimum necessary information about the device inside.

The package looks like this:

Appearance

The ViewSonic VG 1655 portable monitor looks a lot like a tablet. The front of the device is occupied by a screen with a diagonal of 16 inches. There are small 4mm bezels along three edges of the screen, and the bottom of the bezel is 24mm and has the ViewSonic logo on it.

Screen resolution FullHD or 1920 x 1080 pixels. The maximum screen refresh rate is 60 Hz with viewing angles of 178º/178º. At 1280 x 1024, the screen update will be 75 Hz. The rest of the screen characteristics, declared by the manufacturer, are as follows:

  • Contrast: 800:1

  • Brightness: 250cd/m2

  • Response time: 6.5ms

  • 8-bit color depth (6-bit + FRC)

  • Backlight: LED

The back of the ViewSonic VG 1655 is an aluminum cover that dissipates heat from hot components in the monitor.

Since this model is portable, an ordinary leg as a support for a monitor would not seem appropriate here. Therefore, an aluminum folding leg is provided at the rear of the case. This part is attached to the body of a portable monitor by three loops that allow the user to position the monitor steadily, providing the most convenient tilt angle. If desired, the monitor can be rotated 180 degrees (placed vertically), and in this position it will also be stable.

In addition to the leg, on the back of the case there is a joystick to control the monitor menu, it is also responsible for turning it on and off.

At the bottom of the VG 1655 there are two small rubber feet for greater stability of the monitor, as well as two speakers with a power of 0.8W.

The following connectors and ports are located on the left side of the monitor:

  • 2x USB Type-C

  • 1 mini-HDMI

  • 1 x mini jack

From the connector names above, you can understand that this portable monitor can be connected in two ways: via miniHDMI or via USB Type-C. Also, a USB Type-C will be busy for power.

ViewSonic VG 1655 comes with a magnetic case that protects the screen from scratches and dust. The case itself is quite dense, it feels like there is a plastic insert inside the case. When in use, it does not interfere and during operation because it folds well, it does not interfere with the aluminum leg. If the work surface is very slippery, the cover can be removed and used as a non-slip mat for the monitor.

Menu

As mentioned above, the portable monitor is controlled using a joystick. The menu is completely Russified and intuitive. The main sections have additional tabs to adjust the monitor. The main tabs look like this:

  • input selection

  • sound adjustment

  • view mode

  • color settings

  • manual setting

  • Settings menu

There is also a “quick” menu with basic settings, which is activated when the joystick is tilted:

  • view mode

  • Contrast/Brightness

  • input selection

  • Main menu

  • Departure

viewing angles

Application and use experience.

Without specific tasks, a portable monitor will most likely be a toy for a while and then you will sell it. My use of the ViewSonic VG 1655 is to use it as an additional screen to find information when working on the main monitor and minimizing the windows or switching between them is not very convenient, and you can lose the idea. Also, ViewSonic VG 1655 is convenient to stand vertically and read information from chats and instant messengers. Also, if you have small children who love to be around and “help mom and dad to work”, you can turn on cartoons or fairy tales on this monitor. In operation, this monitor neatly saves bench space when testing systems performance. By servicing servers and communication cabinets, more usable space will be freed up as the portable monitor will replace the standard general monitor.

In addition to my experience of use, ViewSonic VG 1655 can be connected to a laptop or smartphone. When connected to a smartphone, it is worth connecting additional power to the VG 1655 screen from the network; otherwise, the backlight will only work at 10%, in such a “tandem” the smartphone will receive pass-through charging, which seems to be a bit, but it prolongs the use of both devices together.

conclusion

The ViewSonic VG 1655 is not a monitor you buy for nothing. Most likely, it will have specific tasks and conditions for which it will not be replaced. Its advantages are portability, small size, easy connection and good screen performance for this type of device. Of the minuses, the lack of a built-in battery and the cost as a full-fledged monitor can be noted.
