Haas said Intel’s strategy focusing on “vertical integration” under former CEO Pat Gelsinger was smart but needed more time. This is not a three-year strategy, Haas said, adding that vertical integration could provide Intel with a competitive advantage, but the cost could be insurmountable. In his opinion, the bar is very high.
Haas did not comment on rumors that Arm was considering buying part of Intel, but noted that it once encouraged Gelsinger to license Arm designs to increase chip production.
Regarding speculation that Arm might build its own AI accelerators, Haas explained that this would allow the company to better align hardware and software, but did not provide details yet.
When it comes to artificial intelligence, Haas believes AGI (artificial general intelligence) is much closer than he thought a year ago.
