If supply chain issues arise in lithium-ion production, sodium-ion batteries are seen as a solution. These batteries use sodium, which is found in salt and ocean water, which is more abundant and less harmful to the environment. They also perform better in extreme cold and have a lower risk of fire than lithium-ion batteries.
Although sodium-ion batteries currently have lower energy density than lithium-ion batteries, their cost advantages make them attractive for budget EVs.
