Thompson was shot and killed on the morning of December 4 near the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan. New York police said a 50-year-old executive who planned to attend a UnitedHealthcare conference was fatally shot in the chest.

The attacker managed to escape and the search lasted five days. On Monday, December 9, police detained Mangione after one of the customers identified him at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The city is located approximately 450 km west of New York.

During his arrest, Mangidone was found in possession of several fake IDs and a U.S. passport, clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the shooter in the surveillance video, and a firearm with a silencer. Police noted that the suspect may have used a homemade gun assembled from several parts, making it difficult to trace its origin.

A three-page handwritten document was also found on Mangdon’s person, “revealing his motivation and thoughts,” including his negative attitude toward the American health care system, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

According to information on Mangdon’s social networks, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the Ivy League universities, and worked as a data engineer at the car sales service TrueCar. On his social network page X, the defendant published an x-ray of the spine after surgery performed on it.

Thompson has led UnitedHealthcare since April 2021, according to information on the company’s website. UnitedHealthcare is part of UnitedHealth Group, which is among the largest Fortune 500 organizations in the United States by revenue. The group, which earned $371 billion in 2023, is in eighth place in the ranking.
