Experts are now calling for an end to land misuse. This is because the number of such lands increases every year and this problem further aggravates the scarcity of other natural resources.
According to the authors of a new study, land degradation is occurring worldwide at a rate of one million square kilometers per year. The area of already degraded soil is 15 million square kilometers. This is larger than the land of Antarctica.
As UNCCD Secretary-General Ibrahim Tiyao points out, if we do not recognize that soil plays an important role in the health of the planet and do nothing about it, this will affect every aspect of our lives in the future.
The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) has prepared a study titled “Breaking Back from the Brink”. This study states that until recently, the world’s ecosystems absorbed almost 1/3 of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of human activities. The ability of trees and soil to absorb this gas has decreased by 20% in the last 10 years. All due to climate change and deforestation.
The report also points out that agricultural activities are the main culprit in soil degradation. That’s why our planet is losing 80% of its forests. Methods such as intensive use of chemicals, use of pesticides and water transfer also destroy the soil.
