For the new study, researchers collected data from the Swedish Mammography Cohort and the Swedish Male Cohort. These two large scientific studies conducted surveys of participants’ diets in 1997 and 2009. The final sample included 69,705 individuals.

The results of the study revealed that drinking sugary drinks is more harmful to health than other types of sugar. Drinking too many of these can increase your risk of ischemic stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and abdominal aortic aneurysm.

In addition, higher sugar intake increased the risk of ischemic stroke and abdominal aortic aneurysm overall, as well as the risk of heart failure in participants with a normal body mass index.

Also surprisingly, consuming sugary foods occasionally was associated with better health than avoiding such foods altogether.
