Saudi Arabia was the only candidate to host the World Cup, AP noted. According to the agency, the kingdom’s authorities plan to spend “tens of billions of dollars” on projects related to the next championship.
Saudi Arabia’s candidacy was confirmed along with the candidates to host the 2030 World Cup. Spain, Portugal and Morocco will play the majority of the matches, and Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will each have one of the 104 matches.
The previous FIFA World Cup took place in 2022 and was held for the first time in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar. The Argentine team won the competition, beating the French players who took the championship in the 2018 World Cup.
