GM isn’t Cruise’s creator: the company acquired the startup in 2016. But in 2023, the robotaxi brand came under regulatory scrutiny after one of its driverless cars hit a pedestrian in San Francisco, dragging the person a significant distance.

The ensuing investigation led Cruise to cease all operations related to driverless vehicles and manned robotaxes, and several company executives resigned or were fired over the incident.

Cruise recently resumed limited operations, but the blow to its reputation appears to be an insurmountable hurdle for the parent company, according to the source.
