Humpback whales are known for their long migrations, which can reach latitudes of 8,000 kilometers. However, migrations that cover such large distances between different oceans are unusual for this species. Zoologists believe that the male may have made this journey in search of females to mate with. This is the main reason for the migration of whales.
Scientists used a whale photo identification database to match images of its tail fins to confirm that the male in Zanzibar was the same whale observed in Colombia. The distance between these points is approximately 13,000 kilometers, but the whale itself likely traveled an even greater distance, approximately 18,000 kilometers.
The reasons for such a large-scale journey remain unclear. Perhaps the whale had to change its feeding range due to food shortages caused by climate change, or perhaps it was looking for mating opportunities in new waters.
