The Capital Tagansky District Court of First Instance registered protocols under Article 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (non-compliance by the operator with the obligations stipulated by the law of the Russian Federation when collecting personal data) in connection with WhatsApp, Spotify and Snapchat.

Court threatens millionaire fines to WhatsApp, Spotify and Snapchat

Consideration of the protocols is scheduled for July 28, reports Interfax.

For the main or repeated refusal to locate the data of the Russians, the companies face million-dollar fines:

  • Spotify and Snapchat - up to 6 million rubles,
  • WhatsApp - up to 18 million rubles for repeated non-compliance with the requirements.

Many foreign companies have previously adapted user data storage systems to the legislation of the Russian Federation (ie localized their storages in Russia). Among them are Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, PayPal, LG and others (about 600 firms).

But there are also companies that have already suffered from the refusal to locate data. In 2016, the LinkedIn social network was blocked. The court also fined Google and Likee in absentia.

In June alone, the UPS delivery service was fined 1 million rubles, and Twitch, Pinterest, and Airbnb were fined 2 million rubles.
