A recent study found that the most active American adults walk 160 minutes a day, at about 3 mph. Scientists also found that if the least active adults walked at this pace for 111 minutes longer each day, their lives were extended by 11 years.
Walking is one of the best ways to maintain physical activity and overall health, according to Thomas Buford, MD, professor of medicine and director of the Exercise Therapy Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. 5 km/h is a good target, but it all depends on your fitness level. If you are not physically ready, then do not rush to move to this pace. If you can go faster, do not limit yourself.
