Musk has proposed a new board structure that would give him initial control of the company, which OpenAI opposes. These disagreements led Musk to leave the board in 2018. Musk founded his own artificial intelligence company, xAI, in late 2023.
In 2024, Musk sued OpenAI over its partnership with Microsoft, arguing that it violated OpenAI’s non-profit status. However, OpenAI withdrew the lawsuit after Musk published a blog containing emails expressing his desire to merge OpenAI with Tesla.
