The European Commission demanded that Apple ensure “effective compatibility” of iOS with other platforms.

The company must change many aspects of iOS so that third-party developers can have access to technologies that are currently only available to Apple. For example, the company must complete the connection with smartwatches and other accessories. Also, external apps should be allowed to run entirely in the background, just like the built-in iOS apps.

The document even contradicts features like AirPlay and AirDrop.

Apple, in turn, believes that such actions increase user safety. Cupertino residents note that Meta* (* recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) made the most compliance requests under the DMA.

If Apple decided to support all of these requests, Facebook*, Instagram* and WhatsApp could allow Meta to read all of a user’s messages and emails on a user’s device, see every phone call, monitor every app, scan every photo, view files and calendar events, register all passwords and much more. This is data that Apple has chosen not to provide access to in order to ensure the highest possible protection for users. [9to5]
