According to Chainalysis, the number of hacks related to cryptocurrency theft this year was 303. For comparison, in 2023 the number of incidents was 282 and the total value of stolen cryptocurrencies was $1.8 billion.

The study notes that the intensity of cybercriminal attacks in 2024 began to increase after July. Chainalysis analysts admitted that this is due to cooperation between the DPRK and Russia, which began after the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang.

Most cryptocurrency attacks occurred between the first and third quarters, and the rate decreased in the fourth quarter, the report shows.

In late November, TechCrunch wrote that North Korean hackers stole billions of dollars in cryptocurrency by posing as recruiters and IT specialists looking for jobs at multinational companies. North Korean attackers have already infiltrated “hundreds” of organizations around the world, according to Microsoft security researcher James Elliott.
