GitHub Copilot finally got a free version last Wednesday (18). The new tier in the series was released on the same day as the platform’s launch. The presence of 150 million developers has been recorded.
Available in June 2022, GitHub Copilot is supported by several major language models (LLMs), including Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4o. Built in Visual Studio Code, Microsoft’s IDE and code editor, the tool provides code suggestions, fixes problems, and simplifies the entire development process.
At launch, GitHub Copilot was only available by subscription – $10 on the Pro plan (R$61.80 at current prices).
Now, on the free tier, All developers can try the wizard at no cost – and of course this comes with some restrictions. At this access level, GitHub Copilot offers:
- 2,000 code completions per month;
- 50 chat messages per month;
- Request rendering with GPT-4o (OpenAI) or Claude 3.5 Sonnet (Anthropic);
- Editing multiple files (Co-Pilot Edits);
- Use of Copilot extensions and skills;
In addition to integration with Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot is also available in the repository dashboard. From there you can contact the chatbot on Copilot Chat.
GitHub Copilot Free is available to everyone
According to Julio Viana, GitHub’s regional manager in Brazil, the free version of Copilot Makes the product more accessible and expands the reach of the technology. “The Brazilian software developer community is one of the largest in the world, and we couldn’t be happier to offer these resources to users in the country without having to spend any extra money,” the executive said.
“Millions of developers have already experienced the benefits that AI and Copilot bring to their daily work. With Copilot Free, more people gain access to advanced AI capabilities to accelerate the development of safer, higher-quality code,” Viana said.
You other GitHub Copilot subscription levels remain available. In the press release, the platform confirmed that students, teachers, and administrators of relevant open source projects continue to have free access to GitHub Copilot Pro.
